Can you take CBD oil on a plane? UK airport rules

06/10/2026
Aeroplanes on an airport runway

Yes, you can usually take CBD oil on a plane from a UK airport. Security treats it like any other cosmetic oil: in hand luggage it must be in a container of 100 ml or less, inside one clear resealable bag of up to 1 litre, unless your airport allows larger containers. The bigger question is the law where you land, because rules on CBD and THC differ from country to country.

Key facts

Counts as a liquid?
Yes. GOV.UK lists "cosmetics and toiletries, including creams, lotions, oils" as liquids (as of October 2026)
Hand luggage limit
Containers of 100 ml or less at most UK airports, even if only part full
The bag
One transparent, resealable bag per person, holding no more than 1 litre and about 20 cm × 20 cm
Larger containers
Some airports allow containers of up to 2 litres; check with your departure airport
Hold luggage
GOV.UK advises packing liquids in hold luggage where possible
CBD in UK law
Pure CBD is not a controlled drug; THC is Class B

Can I take CBD oil in my hand luggage?

Yes. At UK airports, CBD oil falls under the liquids rules, because GOV.UK counts cosmetics and toiletries, "including creams, lotions, oils", as liquids. That applies to CBD oils, creams and balms alike. In practice:

  • the bottle must hold 100 ml or less, and a larger bottle that is only part full is still refused;
  • it goes in your single clear, resealable bag of up to 1 litre (about 20 cm × 20 cm), together with your other liquids;
  • some airports allow containers of up to 2 litres, so check the rules of your departure airport and of any airport you change planes at.

Typical dropper bottles of 10 ml or 30 ml are well under the 100 ml limit. Keep the bottle in its original box with the label, so security staff can see what it is.

Can I pack CBD oil in my checked luggage?

Yes. GOV.UK advises passengers to pack liquids in their hold luggage where possible, which avoids the 100 ml limit altogether. Close the cap firmly and put the bottle in a sealed bag in case it leaks. Your airline sets its own baggage rules, so check them before you fly.

Is it legal to fly with CBD oil within the UK?

The Home Office states that pure CBD "is not controlled under the MDA 1971", while THC and other controlled cannabinoids are Class B drugs. A CBD product that contains traces of controlled cannabinoids is lawful only if it meets the exempt product definition in the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. Our guide Is CBD legal in the UK? explains how this works.

Can I take CBD oil abroad?

That depends on where you're going, not where you leave from. Countries treat CBD and trace THC differently, and some treat any cannabis product strictly. Before you travel:

  • check the rules of your destination and of any country where you change planes, using official government or embassy sources;
  • if THC is a concern, choose a THC-free product, and see our guide to full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and isolate;
  • keep the product in its original labelled packaging, and save a copy of the batch certificate on your phone; our guide explains how to read a certificate of analysis;
  • if you are unsure, leave it at home.

What about flights to the United States?

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says its officers "do not search for illegal drugs, but if any illegal substance or evidence of criminal activity is discovered during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer". US federal and state rules on hemp and cannabis products differ, so check them before you travel.

Will CBD oil show up on a drug test after a trip?

Drug tests look for THC, not CBD. If you could be tested at work or abroad, our guide to CBD, drug tests and driving explains the risk from trace THC.

From our production

We test every batch in Switzerland, and we have never had a failed test since 2013. Each batch has its own certificate, which is worth keeping on your phone when you travel with one of our oils.
