Scientific research on the effect of CBD on cats, dogs, and horses
We have a research collaboration with the University of Bologna and their Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences for a range of studies on the effect of cannabidiol (CBD) in cats, dogs and horses.
The Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences is studying the effect of cannabidiol (CBD) in animals. The objective is to increase the understanding of the effect on animals to continue to improve our product development of CBD pet products.

Research study shows a positive effect of CBD on cats
The research study titled 'Localization of cannabinoid and cannabinoid-related receptors in the cat gastrointestinal tract' has been published and is now available.
Abstract from our research study on cats:
Cannabinoid receptors were widely found in the layers of the cat's gut, suggesting a potential role in treating gastrointestinal inflammation, although more functional evidence is needed.
Research studies show a positive effect of CBD on dogs
Professor Roberto Chiocchetti, DVM, PhD, and his team from the Department of Veterinary Medical Science have also conducted two research studies on dogs, funded by InnoVet:
Abstract from the first research study on dogs:
Cannabinoid receptors are widely distributed in a dog's gut, suggesting they could help treat inflammatory bowel disease and other gut disorders by easing motility problems and reducing visceral hypersensitivity.
Abstract from the second research study on dogs:
Cannabinoid receptors are emerging as promising targets for treating chronic pain in both humans and animals. To advance cannabinoid-based therapies, it's crucial to understand where these receptors are located in the body. Currently, knowledge about the distribution of cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system of dogs is limited. This ex vivo study aims to map the cellular locations of cannabinoid receptors in canine spinal ganglia, providing vital information for developing pain relief strategies.
Research studies show a positive effect of CBD on horses
The Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University of Bologna has published our collaborative research study on CBD and horses, titled 'Localization of Cannabinoid and Cannabinoid-Related Receptors in the Equine Dorsal Root Ganglia'.
Abstract from our first research study on horses:
Our study, backed by Formula Swiss, revealed that CBD receptors are widely distributed in the sensory neurons and glial cells of horse spinal ganglia. This discovery lays a crucial anatomical foundation for future research into the therapeutic use of non-psychotropic CBD and other cannabinoids in managing pain and discomfort in horses.
Our second study on horses, "Localisation of Cannabinoid and Cannabinoid-Related Receptors in the Horse Ileum", is published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, volume 104, September 2021.
Abstract from our second research study on horses:
Colic, a common and urgent digestive issue in horses, demands effective treatment. Emerging research suggests that activating cannabinoid receptors may help reduce gastrointestinal inflammation and visceral sensitivity. However, the exact location of these receptors in the equine intestine remains unknown. This study aimed to map the distribution of cannabinoid receptors in the ileum of healthy horses using immunohistochemical techniques. By identifying these receptors, we can lay the groundwork for developing cannabinoid-based therapies to treat gastrointestinal disorders in horses.
The many benefits of CBD oil for pets
CBD oil is showing great promise in supporting the health of pets, both for acute and chronic conditions. Research indicates that CBD may help manage arthritis, boost immunity, reduce stress, and address digestive issues. It also shows potential in treating diabetes, various organ diseases, and easing cancer treatment symptoms.
Veterinarians have observed that CBD can aid in healing acute injuries like sprains, torn ligaments, and broken bones, as well as assist in post-operative care. This is due to its effects on the animal's endocannabinoid system, helping to reduce swelling, pain, and stiffness.
