Scientific research on CBD for pets: Cats, dogs, and horses
Working with the University of Bologna's Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences, Formula Swiss has supported studies exploring cannabidiol (CBD) in animals such as cats, dogs, and horses. This collaboration has helped build a clearer picture of how CBD interacts with different species and continues to guide the development of our CBD products for pets.
CBD research in cats
One study titled "Localisation of cannabinoid and cannabinoid-related receptors in the cat gastrointestinal tract" examined the presence of cannabinoid receptors in feline digestive systems. Researchers identified these receptors throughout the gut, providing a foundation for further investigations into their role in gastrointestinal function.
CBD research in dogs
Led by Professor Roberto Chiocchetti, DVM, PhD, and his team, two notable studies have been carried out with support from InnoVet:
- "Localisation of cannabinoid receptors CB1, CB2, GPR55, and PPARα in the canine gastrointestinal tract": This study mapped the distribution of cannabinoid receptors in dogs’ digestive systems, highlighting their presence across different regions of the gut.
- "Cellular distribution of canonical and putative cannabinoid receptors in canine cervical dorsal root ganglia": This research identified receptor sites in the canine nervous system, offering insight into how cannabinoids may interact with sensory pathways.
CBD research in horses
Studies supported by Formula Swiss have also examined the presence of cannabinoid receptors in horses:
- "Localisation of cannabinoid and cannabinoid-related receptors in the equine dorsal root ganglia": This research observed receptor distribution within the sensory neurons and glial cells of horses’ spinal ganglia.
- "Localisation of cannabinoid and cannabinoid-related receptors in the horse ileum", published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science: This study mapped cannabinoid receptors within the equine ileum, providing valuable data for ongoing investigations into digestive function.
