CBD for horses: our university research and other published studies
Supporting university research into CBD and other cannabinoids in animals since 2019.
The university tissue studies explain where cannabinoids may act in horses. Other researchers tested different preparations, with positive, mixed and no-benefit findings. None of these publications tested Pet Routine for Horses, which is for external use only.
Our university research partnership
Our horse research at the University of Bologna
Formula Swiss has funded research by Professor Roberto Chiocchetti's team at the University of Bologna into how cannabinoids could act in horses. The university's record lists a 2019–2021 Formula Swiss-funded project on CBD receptors in the horse's gut and spinal nerve ganglia, and three of the studies below name Formula Swiss as their funder. These are laboratory studies of horse tissue. They show where cannabinoids may act in the body, but they did not test a CBD product in living horses or establish a dose.
Researchers examined facial sensory nerve ganglia from five horses.
What happened
Cannabinoid-related receptors were found in most nerve cells in the facial sensory ganglion.
Good to know
Laboratory tissue study. It supports further research into facial nerve disorders, but no treatment was tested.

What other CBD and cannabinoid studies in horses found
Published equine research, grouped by topic. Small trials and different preparations limit what we can conclude. A placebo is a dummy oil or paste without the active cannabinoids, used for comparison.
Horses with mild osteoarthritis received usual pain treatment, with or without added CBD for 14 days.
What happened
Chronic pain scores fell in both groups, with lower scores in the CBD group.
Good to know
A small, short study in which both groups also received phenylbutazone. It does not show the effect of CBD on its own. The paper reports 20 horses in its abstract but 24 in its methods and tables.
Twenty-four horses with osteoarthritis received CBDA or a CBG/CBD oil for 14 days, without an untreated group.
What happened
Pain scores fell in both groups; no adverse effects were reported.
Good to know
There was no untreated comparison group, and both oils differed from CBD alone. The improvements cannot be attributed to CBD or to Formula Swiss products.
Comparative study without an untreated group · 2024
Researchers compared tissue from 12 laminitic and six healthy hooves.
What happened
Receptor levels were higher in laminitic than healthy hoof tissue.
Good to know
Laboratory study by the University of Bologna team; the paper reports no funding. It suggests a research target, but no laminitis treatment was tested.
Exercising Thoroughbreds received three low single doses of CBD in a crossover study.
What happened
CBD was well tolerated, with no behavioural, digestive or heart problems, and was still measurable in the blood after 72 hours.
Good to know
A small study with mixed effects on inflammation markers. The authors say more research is needed before CBD can be recommended as an anti-inflammatory.
Thirty geldings received CBD oil or plain rapeseed oil on their feed for 28 days.
What happened
The oil was readily eaten, blood chemistry was unaffected and no banned substances were found in the blood.
Good to know
Testing showed the product contained far less CBD than its manufacturer's initial analysis indicated, so the horses received much less CBD than planned.
Researchers studied cannabinoid detection after hemp-straw bedding exposure and CBD oil use.
What happened
The researchers advise against hemp straw bedding before competition unless at least 48 hours pass, and suggest that bedding exposure may be distinguishable from CBD oil use.
Good to know
Detection depends on the laboratory method and on each organisation's rules.
Twelve horses ate feed containing small amounts of CBD or CBDA for three days.
What happened
Both were detectable in the urine of all horses, but not after more than four days.
Good to know
Not designed to set detection times, and routine doping laboratories may be more or less sensitive.

Is this the 2026 formula?
Yes. This is our 2026 Pet Routine for Horses formula. Formula Swiss has produced CBD products in Switzerland since 2013, bringing more than 10 years of CBD experience to the range.
How do I use Pet Routine for Horses?
Shake the bottle well before use and apply the drops directly to your horse's skin as directed on the label. The product is for external use only.
How many drops should I use for my horse?
Follow the amount and directions on the label, and ask your vet if you are unsure.
Can I use it alongside my horse’s medicines?
Ask your vet before use, especially if your horse takes medicines or has a health condition. CBD can interact with medicines. Do not stop or change prescribed treatment. Do not use in pregnant or breeding animals, and stop use if an adverse reaction occurs.
Is Pet Routine for Horses a registered medicine?
No. Pet Routine for Horses is not a registered veterinary medicine and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease. It is not a substitute for veterinary care or prescribed medication.
Did the university studies test this horse oil?
No. The University of Bologna studies mapped cannabinoid receptors in horse tissues. Three of the four papers in our university section acknowledge Formula Swiss funding. Other research used different preparations. None of these publications tested Pet Routine for Horses.
Can I use CBD if my horse competes?
Do not assume that 0% THC makes a CBD product competition-safe. CBD and other cannabinoids may be prohibited under the rules that apply to your horse. Check the current rules with your governing body and vet before use. We do not give a competition withdrawal interval.
