US embraces cannabis nursing as a specialised field

While Germany has been familiar with medical cannabis since 2017, the full therapeutic potential of this natural remedy remains underappreciated by many medical professionals. Patients often find it challenging to obtain prescriptions and have their treatment costs covered by health insurance. However, in the United States, the landscape is rapidly evolving, with over 40 states having legalised medical marijuana since California's pioneering move in 1996. Recognising the increasing role of cannabis in patient care, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has recently acknowledged cannabis nursing as a distinct speciality.

ANA: Championing the role of cannabis nurses

The American Nurses Association (ANA) represents the interests of over 5 million nurses across the United States. In a statement released on 27th September 2023, the association announced that cannabis nursing is now recognised as a specialised nursing practice. This speciality focuses on caring for patients seeking guidance and proper instruction on the therapeutic use of cannabis.

ANA President, Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, expressed her delight at the formal recognition of cannabis nursing. She emphasised the pivotal role and unique contributions of cannabis nurses to the healthcare system. Their efforts promote the seamless integration of cannabis therapies across various healthcare sectors.

Shaping the future of cannabis nursing

The American Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA) is committed to fostering excellence in cannabis nursing practice. Their mission encompasses advocacy, collaboration, education, research, and the development of strategic approaches. ACNA's vision is to enhance healthcare outcomes by paving the way for education and proficiency in cannabis nursing, underpinned by reason, compassion, integrity, and principles of social justice.

ACNA President, Rachel Parmelee, expressed her elation at the groundbreaking recognition of cannabis nursing by the ANA. She highlighted the transformative potential of this speciality, both within specialised and general nursing practices, ultimately benefiting patients nationwide.

Changing paradigms with cannabis in healthcare

Rachel Parmelee pointed out that nurses constitute the largest group of healthcare professionals. They have the power to shift the healthcare paradigm, integrating various wellness modalities beyond traditional Western medicine. Cannabis nursing requires specific knowledge and skills to navigate healthcare delivery and overcome the stigma associated with medical cannabis consumption. The ultimate goal is to bolster a healthier society.

ACNA envisions a lasting, transformative change that enriches both specialised and general nursing practices, always prioritising patient well-being. Their commitment extends beyond pioneering cannabis nursing; they aim to contribute to the broader landscape of nursing practice and patient care.

ANA's advocacy for medical cannabis

The ANA has consistently supported the need for clinical research to adequately inform patients and providers about the efficacy of medical marijuana and its constituent cannabinoids. They have addressed the roles and responsibilities of nursing staff concerning the use of cannabinoids in healthcare. The association acknowledges the potential of cannabinoids in treating diseases and managing symptoms.

For over two decades, the ANA has advocated for safe access to therapeutic marijuana and related cannabinoids. They have called for a scientific review of marijuana's Schedule I status under the Controlled Substances Act, suggesting its reclassification to Schedule II, which would significantly facilitate research into cannabis's medical benefits.

The ANA's policy statement also emphasises the development of prescription standards, covering indications for use, specific dosages, expected effects, potential side effects, and guidelines for discontinuing medication. They advocate evidence-based standards for the medical use of cannabis and cannabinoids. Additionally, the statement calls for legal protection against criminal or civil sanctions for patients using cannabis and cannabinoids for medical purposes.

Given the ANA's recognition, it's evident that cannabis nursing is rightfully considered a serious speciality, reflecting the evolving landscape of medical cannabis in the healthcare sector.
