The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health has given the green light to the launch of the "Züri Can - Cannabis with Responsibility" study. As of now, individuals interested in participating in the study can register.
"Züri Can - Cannabis with Responsibility" is a 3.5-year study designed to provide a scientific basis for discussions on the future development of cannabis policy. Interested parties can apply to participate in the study, which is open to Zurich residents who are 18 years of age or older. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, and professional drivers are not eligible to participate.
Participants will be allowed to consume their cannabis in social clubs and private spaces but not in publicly accessible areas. Violations of these rules can result in fines from the police, confiscation of the cannabis, and possible exclusion from the study.
In June 2022, the Psychiatric University Clinic Zurich, in collaboration with the City of Zurich, submitted an application for study approval to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) and the Cantonal Ethics Commission. The Ethics Commission granted approval for the observational study in August 2022, with FOPH approval now also secured. City Councilor Andreas Hauri expressed his enthusiasm for the launch of the scientifically monitored cannabis study, stating that it would contribute to a modern drug policy.
With FOPH approval in place, producers can now begin cultivating the cannabis plants needed for the study. The first harvest is expected in July 2023, with processed and packaged cannabis flowers likely to be available for purchase at designated dispensaries from August 2023, after the summer holidays. Hash products, due to their longer production time and more complex processing, are expected to be available in the second half of October 2023. The study's cannabis will come from domestic organic production, with nine different products varying in THC and CBD content available during the pilot trial.
For three years, residents of Zurich who are of legal age and regularly consume cannabis can now register to participate in the study. A total of 21 dispensaries for study cannabis are expected to be available by the planned sales launch in August 2023. Those admitted to the study will be able to purchase legal cannabis for personal use under regulated conditions during the three-year period. Participants can choose whether they want to obtain their cannabis from a pharmacy, a social club, or the City of Zurich's Drug Information Center.
